One of the best examples of contemporary
instrumental flamenco is to be found on ‘Calima’,
the fifth release by Gerardo
Núñez: a native of Jerez in
New York. In that American city he recorded a
new number that opens the record and gives it
its name:a long number of jazz-soleá-por-bulerías
played with Danilo Pérez and John Patucci.
There's also a divertimento-rumba with two icons
of American flamenco, Strunz and Farah. But the
impression that he seemed to be concentrating
on the American market is diminished on hearing
the soleares dedicated to Jerez or the masterfully
played granaína.
