‘Techarí’, Ojos de Brujo (special edition CD + CD-ROM)

María la Tero, April 2006

Note: while supplies last. No, the special edition of ‘Techarí’ by Ojos de Brujo, which is a book, CD and CD-ROM at the same time, will not be available for long. And it isn’t a chance to let pass by. The multicolored band has managed to gather a heterogeneous group of top-notch graphic artists to illustrate the songs on the album, portray the band during the recording and document the group’s trip to Havana.

Excerpts from 'Techarí'

The illustrators’ graphic work is spread out over the sixty full-color pages of this book-CD presented in a vertical hardcover format. David Folvari, Dran, Matthew Curry, Santos de Veracruz, El Niño de las Pinturas, Gislene Mayumi... are a few of the prestigious artists who have been inspired by the music from ‘Techarí’ from such different places on the planet as Toulouse, Tokyo, Barcelona, Washington, Brighton and Granada. Different origins, different personalities, different techniques, different visions... which come together in the commitment-laden messages sent out in the songs by Marina la Canillas.

Having enjoyed the comic – of course, while playing the record – it’s time for the CD-ROM. Directed by Miguel Ángel Ramos – in charge of the entire album’s graphic design – it binds photos, music videos, a documentary and song lyrics translated into fifteen languages. The photographs are split up into two albums: one by David Katzenstein with ninety photos taken at the recording studio (including those of flamenco collaborators such as Pepe Habichuela and Raúl Rodríguez); and another with some sixty photos by Iván Soca of moments during the band’s trip to Cuba. That tour is moreover recorded in a thirteen-minute documentary entitled ‘Mi Habana sana’ and directed by Ciro Benemelis, which included both the rehearsals and the performance with Cuban musicians taking part on the record.

Frames from CD-ROM 'Techarí'

Three music videos can be watched: ‘Todo tiende’, a collage of Bollywood symbols created by Miguel Ángel Ramos; ‘Piedras vs. tanques’, an animated video with comic esthetics by Ermitis Blanco and Abel Álvarez; and ‘No sin alas’, graffiti made with quick-motion camera. All of it in a deluxe pack and for a few euros more than the standard-edition CD. It’s worth it, isn’t it?
