Diego del Morao, 'Orate'

After Paco de Lucía’s landmark, the renovation of flamenco guitar has nearly as many roads as guitarists. More and more, the personalities overcome the currents, since the corpus and the musical skill which now serves them as a starting point are as extensive as the world itself. Moreover, some of them add the whole genetic side to it. And that is the case of Diego del Morao, who on his début album ‘Orate’ combines the generalized freshness of today’s toque with strong ties to the roots of his home, that of the Los Morao family from Jerez.

That means virtuosity and it means flamenco flavor. As a plus, after plunging as lead guitar into the mestizo projects of Diego el Cigala, he adds touches of the world to his music. Precisely, Cigala is his godfather. And not just in name, but really. With his record label Cigala Music he has published this album, the first in his collection devoted to flamenco… and let’s hope that there are many more. Yes, it’s his voice that can be heard in the bulería which opens and names the disc, a song which is the letter of introduction of the musician and his music. There’s energy in the rendition, rhythmic tension, background complexity and craftiness in the melodic loops, factors which place him more on the side of veterans than on that of beginners.

The illustrious string of collaborations provide a good account of the different work which has made him talked-about long before going into the recording studio. Diego Carrasco lends his voice and his art to the soleá ‘Gañanía’, Niña Pastori sings the sweet tangos ‘El aire llega’ for him, none other thanPaco de Lucía shares the bulería ‘El regalo’ with him and, of course, his father, Moraíto joins the fiesta ‘Juan & Co.’. He remains alone in the personal seguiriyas score ‘Pago de la serrana’ and in the rondeña ‘La Mahora’, two intimate rendezvous with the essence of this guitarist with old roots and resounding youth.
