María la Tero, February 2006
After nearly a year of following
the footsteps of the Sara
Baras Company during the international tour
of ‘Sueños’ (‘Dreams’),
photographer Peter Müller has put together
an exuberant photo book. There are snapshots of
the stage in full color, of behind the scenes,
at the studio and as a sort of fashion production
with deluxe stylization. In total, over two hundred
photographs make up this exquisitely published
book which will delight not only Sara Baras fans,
but also lovers of dance and its esthetics.
The book is split into five scenes.
The first one, ‘Sueños’ (‘Dreams’),
has photos taken live during performances of the
show on stages in several cities worldwide such
as Barcelona, Madrid, Salonika, Bangkok, London,
Cádiz... The second one, ‘El sueño
de una vida’ (‘The Dream of a Life’),
following an introductory text in which Sara Baras
‘interviews’ her dreams, takes a look
at moments in the life of the artist and her company
off stage: there are photos of San Fernando, of
a party at the Casa Manteca tavern in Cádiz,
with the family, strolling around Bangkok...

The third scene, ‘Ensayando
un sueño’ (‘Rehearsing a Dream’),
displays snapshots taken in the rehearsals of
the show ‘Mariana Pineda’, rehearsals
which according to the text preceding the photos
“are never a formality. They're fine tuning
of the dream machinery”. The fourth scene
is entitled ‘El sueño del público’
(‘The Dream of the Audience’) and
compiles posters, press clippings and photos that
sketch out the artist's warm relationship with
the audience. The last scene, ‘El sueño
de don Quijote’ (‘The Dream of Don
Quijote’), is the “recreation of diverse
landscapes in the novel” by Cervantes. With
a production like those done by fashion magazines
but “choreographed”, Sara Baras puts
herself in the shoes of windmills, is dubbed knight,
acts likes fire burning books... A curious tribute
to the quixotic universe in the four-hundredth
anniversary of the historic book.
When all of the pages have been
flipped through, a DVD is to be found hidden in
the inside back cover. It does not contain the
entire show ‘Sueños’ as one
might think, but rather a documentary-style audiovisual
which combines "the making of" the photo
reports with passages from the show ‘Sueños’
recorded live, scenes from the company's trips
around the world and excerpts of an interview
with Sara Baras (subtitled in English) in which
she muses over baile and photography.
